Blyth Wright remembered
Blyth Wright’s contribution to avalanche forecasting was celebrated at Glenmore Lodge on April 13th, 2012. Members of Blyth’s family, his friends and colleagues gathered to hang a picture of Blyth in Glenmore Lodge’s bar .
Blyth’s name is synonymous with avalanches in Scotland, both through his work as the coordinator of the avalanche service over many years, and through his book (co-authored with Bob Barton), Chance in a Million.
As coordinator of the avalanche service over many years, he was visited by a plethora of avalanche scientists and experts from around the world. Though they might have been surprised by his accommodation (at one point a shed), they were uniformly impressed by the quality of an avalanche forecasting service that produced forecasts in a wide range of areas for a budget that most of them considered tiny. Blyth’s contribution to avalanche forecasting in Scotland simply cannot be underestimated. Without his determination the avalanche service we know today would not exist, and it was a pleasure for SAFOS to remember this in the company of friends and family.
